Where is this legend/story taken from? The popularized and/or westernized story in the by Disney (in my opinion) does not depict gender equality, at least of it’s importance. There is a commonality of these stereotypes placed upon all types of Asians, not just Chinese people. Jumping along the bridge = knowledge of martial arts Asian women paint their faces white like Geishas (Japanese tradition) Common among many Asian: Slanted eyes, black hair, obeying parents, making parents proud, … having arranged marriages In America, there is no such thing in differentiating Asians they are all Chinese. leaves no room for all other Asian nationalities to be distinguished. Tony Bancroft and Berry Cook are depicting that there is only one type of Asian, and. Mulan is a film based on a Chinese legend, yet the portrayed images consist of a combination of nationalities. Americans, or more specifically those who are non-Asian, have a stereotypical misrepresentation of Asians: slanted eyes, Geisha-looking women, and the idea of wise and lucky grasshoppers/crickets.
